Africo 1951. A town perched in Aspromonte. Isolated. A woman dies in childbirth: the doctor never arrived and there is no way to reach the 
Navy where the doctor and the institutions are. The whole country flows like a river in flood on the paths. An angry mass that demands a 
doctor: "We are not beasts" is the desperate cry addressed to the authorities. Despite the written promise extorted from the prefect, 
the Africans are not idle. They decide to build the road themselves!
However, the enthusiasm soon dies down: for different reasons, not everyone accepts that Africans build their own path and the tension in the village grows. 
The citizens do not accept the intimidation and Don Totò shoots, wounding one of them. Other crimes, but nothing changes in Africo and all that remains is to leave.

Africo 1951. Un paese arroccato nellAspromonte. Isolato. Una donna muore di parto: il medico non è mai arrivato e non cè una strada per raggiungere la Marina dove ci sono il medico e le istituzioni. Tutto il paese si riversa come un fiume in piena sui sentieri. Una massa inferocita che reclama un medico: «Non siamo bestie» è il grido disperato rivolto alle autorità. Nonostante la promessa scritta estorta al prefetto, gli africoti non stanno con le mani in mano. Decidono di costruirsela da soli la strada!

Tuttavia però, lentusiasmo si spegne presto: per motivi diversi, non tutti accettano che gli africoti si costruiscano la loro strada e la tensione in paese cresce. I cittadini non accettano lintimidazione e don Totò spara ferendo uno di loro. Altri delitti, ma nulla cambia ad Africo e non resta che andarsene.
