ENGLISH:
While Rome, the Eternal City, is being invaded by a horde of five hundred thousand barbarians, in Hippo Agostino, once a famous lawyer now bishop of the city, decides to remain alongside his faithful, seeing in their lives and in their pain the pillars for the foundation of a new civilization.
It was 24 August 410, when the siege of Rome by the Visigoths ended. The capital of the Empire that had dominated the world for centuries was bending under the weight of a barbaric horde of five hundred thousand people who entered like a river in flood from the Porta Salaria. A tragedy that seals the slow but inexorable crisis of the entire Roman world. A clash of civilizations leads to the end of history. The known world was shocked when it learned that “the eternal city” had been violated, but the voice of a man was raised in support of a new civilization to be rebuilt. On the still firm ruins of the Roman Empire, the young blood of pagan populations and the spirit of Christianity found the pillars of a new humanity. Augustine, a former “hit lawyer”, now, by popular acclaim, bishop of Hippo, a city on the coast of Mediterranean Africa, is convinced of this. From here, from where today the hulls of illegal immigrants depart in search of fortune towards the Western world, Agostino, welcoming the refugees from Rome with their gruesome stories, manages to see a providential road for humanity… The world Roman times set, and in its place another “earthly city” was born, different, unexpected, destined to live in expectation of the “city of God” without attaching itself to earthly models. This man, an indefatigable seeker of meaning in his life and in history, also speaks to us today, men and women at the turn of the millennium passionately in search of meaning.
