A documentary to remember, after a year, those days of waiting and anxiety until the announcement, on the evening of April 19, of the name of the new Pope, an opportunity to reflect on the pontificate of John Paul II and on what it will be the papacy of Benedict XVI. The documentary also tells the behind the scenes of the Vatican to reveal the role of the so-called “funeral effect” and explain how and why the cardinals gathered in the conclave chose Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as the new Pope.

Il 2 aprile 2005, quando morì Papa Giovanni Paolo II, per la prima volta la morte di un Papa divenne un evento mediatico globale. Tutti i network televisivi mondiali, per 3 mesi, coprirono l’intero evento contribuendo a creare quello che un esperto ha definito come il più lungo spot pubblicitario sulla Santa Romana Chiesa. Un documentario per ricordare, a distanza di un anno, quei giorni di attesa e di ansia sino all’annuncio, la sera del 19 aprile, del nome del nuovo Papa, un’occasione per riflettere sul pontificato di Giovanni Paolo II e su ciò che sarà il papato di Benedetto XVI. Il documentario racconta anche il dietro le quinte del Vaticano per rivelare il ruolo del cosiddetto “effetto funerale” e spiegare in che modo e perché i 115 cardinali riuniti in conclave scelsero il cardinale Joseph Ratzinger come nuovo Papa.
