I BANCHIERI DI DIO – The Bankers of God: The Calvi Affair DVD

Come può uno dei più grandi banchieri privati d’Europa finire impiccato ad un traliccio sotto un ponte di Londra? Il film intende aprire tutti gli squarci possibili su questa vicenda, diradando un mistero che tuttavia resta ancora per molti versi impenetrabile. I frammenti della cronaca giudiziaria e giornalistica, ricostruiti con fedeltà, scelti tra i più emblematici, vengono collocati da una logica interna che li fa diventare dramma e quindi storia. La morte di Roberto Calvi, presidente del Banco Ambrosiano, è uno dei momenti esplosivi dell’intreccio fra poteri visibili e poteri invisibili nell’Italia degli anni ’70, punto nevralgico di equilibri internazionali. Il complesso rapporto tra Calvi e il vescovo Marcinkus, presidente dello IOR, la banca vaticana, viene ricostruito dal momento che caduto in disgrazia, in complicati giochi finanziari, Calvi gli chiede aiuto per evitare il baratro. Il film racconta come Calvi, inseguito da giudici e ispettori della Banca d’Italia che hanno scoperto questo enorme buco di 1300 miliardi, cerca disperatamente di evitare la rovina finanziaria, mettendo in atto i più svariati espedienti. Invano il Vaticano tenta di salvarlo. Calvi viene trovato suicida a Londra sotto il Ponte dei Frati neri.

How could one of Europe’s largest private bankers end up hanging from a trestle under a London bridge? The film intends to open all possible glimpses into this affair, unraveling a mystery which, however, still remains impenetrable in many ways. The fragments of the judicial and journalistic chronicle, reconstructed with fidelity, chosen among the most emblematic, are placed by an internal logic that makes them become drama and therefore history. The death of Roberto Calvi, president of Banco Ambrosiano, is one of the explosive moments in the intertwining of visible and invisible powers in Italy in the 1970s, a crucial point of international equilibrium. The complex relationship between Calvi and Bishop Marcinkus, president of the IOR, the Vatican bank, is reconstructed from the moment that, having fallen into disgrace, in complicated financial games, Calvi asks him for help to avoid the abyss. The film tells how Calvi, pursued by judges and inspectors from the Bank of Italy who discovered this enormous hole of 1,300 billion, desperately tries to avoid financial ruin by implementing the most varied expedients. The Vatican tries in vain to save him. Calvi is found suicidal in London under the Black Friars Bridge.
