Dal suo paesetto Gianni è venuto a Napoli per studiare all’università ed ora sta per dare gli esami di laurea. E’ allogglato in una pensione: nel palazzo attiguo abita un ricco giovanotto, che spesso invita amici e donne di teatro. Durante una di queste feste, Marisa, una giovane attrice, sentendosi a disagio in quella rumorosa compagnia, l’abbandona e fuggendo da un terrazzo all’altro capita nella stanza dello studente. I due giovani simpatizzano, ma essendosi allontanato per qualche istante, Gianni al suo ritorno non trova più la ragazza, che se n’è andata lasciando una frase gentile scritta col rossetto sullo specchio. I due si rivedono, Gianni s’innamora perdutamente di Marisa, lascia gli studi, segue la ragazza in una tournée e fa debiti. Al paese Gianni ha la mamma e due zii, Totò e Peppino. Un brutto giorno gli zii ricevono una lettera anonima, nella quale si comunica loro che Gianni se la gode con donne di malaffare. Poi viene un tale, che reclama il pagamento di una cambiale a firma di Gianni, e racconta che il giovanotto è a Milano, dove ha seguito un’attrice.

Totò, Peppino e la madre di Gianni partono per Milano. Qui giunti, gli zii vanno in cerca di Marisa, che li riceve nel proprio camerino. Nell’andarsene i due lasciano sul suo tavolo un cestino con dei biglietti di banca e una lettera, in cui invitano la ragazza a rompere la relazione con Gianni. Presa dallo sconforto, Marisa decide di lasciare l’amante e invece di andare all’appuntamento, che Gianni le ha dato, si reca al ristorante con alcuni amici. Li c’è Gianni che, credendosi tradito, si sfoga cantando la canzone “Malafemmina”. Marisa piange, gli zii, da una saletta vicina, riconoscono la voce del nipote. Il giorno dopo la madre di Gianni trova modo di parlare con Marisa ed essendosi convinta che lei ama veramente Gianni, l’invita ad andare a vivere con loro in campagna. Marisa, che sogna una vita semplice e tranquilla, accetta.

ENGLISH:

Gianni has come to Naples from his small village to study at university and is now about to take his final exams. He’s staying in a boarding house: in the adjacent building lives a wealthy young man who often invites friends and women from the theater. During one of these parties, Marisa, a young actress, feeling uncomfortable in the noisy company, abandons him and, fleeing from one terrace to another, stumbles upon the student’s room. The two young people hit it off, but after he leaves for a moment, Gianni returns to find the girl gone. She’s left, leaving a kind note written in lipstick on the mirror. The two meet again, and Gianni falls madly in love with Marisa, drops out of school, follows her on tour, and gets into debt. In the village, Gianni has a mother and two uncles, Totò and Peppino. One unfortunate day, his uncles receive an anonymous letter informing them that Gianni is having fun with women of ill repute. Then a man comes along, demanding payment on a bill of exchange signed by Gianni, and says that the young man is in Milan, where he has followed an actress.

Totò, Peppino, and Gianni’s mother leave for Milan. Once there, the uncles look for Marisa, who receives them in her dressing room. As they leave, they leave a basket with banknotes and a letter on her table, urging her to end her relationship with Gianni. Dejected, Marisa decides to leave her lover, and instead of going to the date Gianni has arranged, she goes to a restaurant with some friends. There, Gianni, believing he’s been betrayed, vents his anger by singing the song “Malafemmina.” Marisa cries, and the uncles, from a nearby room, recognize their nephew’s voice. The next day, Gianni’s mother finds a way to speak with Marisa and, convinced that she truly loves Gianni, invites her to live with them in the countryside. Marisa, dreaming of a simple, quiet life, accepts.
