A Caianello, ridente paesino, vive il maestro Antonio Scannagatti, musicista e compositore. Scannagatti, che si crede un genio, ha inviato, a suo tempo, lo spartito d’una sua opera ai noti editori milanesi Tiscordi e Sozzogno; ma da quindici anni attende invano una risposta. Il maestro viene un giorno invitato a dirigere la banda del paese in occasione dell’arrivo d’un concittadino, reduce dall’America. Scannagatti da prima rifiuta; ma infine accetta quando una ragazza del paese, che si fa passare per segretaria dell’editore Tiscordi, gli promette di perorare la sua causa presso l’editore. Come improvvisato capobanda, Scannagatti riesce solo a far fuggire l’illustre cittadino multimilionario; ma il maestro, malgrado il fiasco, insiste tuttavia nel reclamare il promesso intervento della presunta segretaria. Poiche’ questa e’ andata a villeggiare a Capri, Scannagatta vi si reca e, dopo una falsa telefonata, va fino a Milano, dove s’incontra con Tiscordi. Questi lo prende per un infermiere e infine lo scaccia. Inseguito da suo cognato e da due altri artisti, Scannagatti li conduce ad un teatro di burattini, che prende per la Scala. Scannagatti finira’ trucidato dal cognato inferocito, ma la sua musica trionfera’ e Caianello gli erigera’ un monumento.

ENGLISH:

In Caianello, a charming village, lives the master Antonio Scannagatti, musician and composer. Scannagatti, who is believed to be a genius, has sent, in his time, the score of one of his works to the well-known Milanese publishers Tiscordi and Sozzogno; but for fifteen years he has been waiting in vain for an answer. One day the teacher is invited to direct the band of the town on the occasion of the arrival of a fellow citizen, who comes from America. Scannagatti first refuses; but he finally accepts when a girl from the village, who goes through the secretary of the publisher Tiscordi, promises to plead his case with the publisher. As an impromptu ringleader, Scannagatti succeeds only in making the illustrious multimillionaire escape; but the teacher, in spite of the fiasco, insists nevertheless in claiming the promised intervention of the alleged secretary. Since she went on holiday to Capri, Scannagatta went there and, after a false phone call, went to Milan, where she met with Tiscordi. He takes him for a nurse and finally drives him away. Pursued by his brother-in-law and two other artists, Scannagatti leads them to a puppet theater, which he takes for La Scala. Scannagatti will end up murdered by his angry brother-in-law, but his music will triumph and Caianello will erect him a monument.
