Totò, commesso in un negozio di stoffe, esasperato dalle mille proibizioni di una moglie invadente e bisbetica, cerca rifugio nella sua soffitta, dove la notte può fumare in pace il sigaro e leggere i libri gialli che tanto lo appassionano. In una di queste sue vacanze casalinghe Totò ricorda episodi della vita sua o di altri che servono a confermare le sue teorie di misogino convinto: le donne sono le prime nemiche dell’uomo,
sono fonte per lui d’infiniti danni, d’insoffribili seccature. Il ricordo di un suo fidanzamento interrotto lo porta ad immaginare quello che avrebbe potuto capitargli durante il viaggio di nozze, date le odierne manie di elezioni di miss, con tutte le relative conseguenze. Il ricordo di una sua avventura con una signora sposata gli richiama alla mente gli inutili e umilianti sotterfugi cui era costretto dall’amante.
Anche il comportamento di sua figlia che dopo aver accalappiato un fidanzato gli impone le più ardue prove di pazienza conferma l’esattezza delle sue teorie. Dopo una violenta lite con la moglie, che l’ha scoperto nel suo rifugio, Totò si separa da lei. Egli ne prova gran sollievo ma nello stesso tempo è costretto a rendersi conto sia dei propri difetti sia delle virtù, fin lì da lui ignorate. Al matrimonio della figlia i due coniugi si riconciliano commossi e si riuniscono.

ENGLISH:
Totò, a clerk in a fabric shop, exasperated by the countless prohibitions of his intrusive and shrewish wife, seeks refuge in his attic, where he can peacefully smoke a cigar at night and read the detective novels he loves so much. During one of these home-bound vacations, Totò recalls episodes from his own life and those of others that serve to confirm his theories as a convinced misogynist: women are a man’s greatest enemy, a source of endless harm and unbearable annoyance. The memory of a broken engagement leads him to imagine what could have happened to him during their honeymoon, given today’s obsession with beauty queens, with all the attendant consequences. The memory of an affair with a married woman reminds him of the futile and humiliating subterfuges to which his lover forced him.
Even the behavior of his daughter, who, after ensnaring a boyfriend, imposes the most arduous tests of patience on him, confirms the accuracy of his theories. After a violent argument with his wife, who discovers him in his hideout, Totò separates from her. He feels great relief, but at the same time is forced to acknowledge both his own flaws and his virtues, which he had previously ignored. At their daughter’s wedding, the two spouses are moved to reconcile and reunite.
