A casa del professor Vegnuzzi fervono i preparativi per il trasferimento a Roma. Durante la cena, Gemma, la moglie del professore, si avventa senza un motivo apparente sull’ospite, la contessa romena Elvira Coceanu, ferendola con un coltello. È l’inizio di un viaggio nella vita di Gemma che porterà alla luce un segreto che la lega alla contessa e che minaccia di mettere a repentaglio il suo matrimonio.

Gemma, figlia di un’affittacamere, s’innamora di un ricco giovane, Paolo Sertori, tuttavia, avendo scoperto che forse è il figlio illegittimo di sua madre, non può sposarlo. Superata la delusione, Gemma è costretta a sposare il giovane professore Franco Vagnuzzi, che l’ha fatta sua ma, non essendo legata al marito da vero affetto, la ragazza è senza difesa di fronte alle infide trame della contessa Elvira che la induce a prostituirsi. Franco è troppo assorto nei suoi studi per accorgersi di quanto la moglie soffra ma, ben presto Gemma torna a casa e si avvicina al marito che impara ad amare un po’ per volta. Quando la contessa tenta di ricattare Gemma per farla tornare alla prosttituzione, la giovane donna racconta tutto al marito che allontana la contessa e comincia ad avvicinarsi al cuore della moglie

At the home of Professor Vegnuzzi preparations are under way for the transfer to Rome. During dinner, Gemma, the professor’s wife, pounces for no apparent reason on the host, the Romanian Countess Elvira Coceanu, wounding her with a knife. It is the beginning of a journey into the life of Gemma that will bring to light a secret that binds her to the countess and threatens to jeopardize her marriage.

Gemma, daughter of a landlady, falls in love with a rich young man, Paolo Sertori, however, having discovered that he is perhaps her mother’s illegitimate son, she cannot marry him. Having overcome the disappointment, Gemma is forced to marry the young professor Franco Vagnuzzi, who has made her his but, not being linked to her husband by true affection, the girl is defenseless in the face of the treacherous plots of Countess Elvira who induces her to prostitute herself . Franco is too absorbed in his studies to notice how much his wife is suffering but Gemma soon returns home and approaches her husband who she learns to love little by little. When the countess tries to blackmail Gemma into returning to prostitution, the young woman tells everything to her husband who pushes the countess away and begins to get closer to his wife’s heart
