Diversi anni dopo l’ultima guerra, il signor Burger giunge a San Gasparre per rivedere i luoghi dove ha vissuto alcuni episodi bellici. Viene accolto gentilmente dal parroco, Don Vincenzo, al quale chiede informazioni su Tego, un partigiano da lui non ucciso nel corso di una rappresaglia. Il sacerdote, rievocando i fatti, narra la fine del poveretto per il quale solo l’odiato nemico ebbe compassione. Tego, infatti, apparteneva alla formazione partigiana diretta da Moreno e, insieme con Caronte, doveva fare saltare un ponte mentre i compagni rimanevano asserragliati fra le rovine di un vecchio castello, in attesa di notizie che avrebbe dovuto portare loro una donna del luogo, Marisa. Ma questa tradì i compagni: furono aggrediti dai tedeschi e annientati. Don Vincenzo, avvisato dalla falsa collaboratrice Dorina, tentò invano di avvisare i partigiani; raggiunto dai tedeschi fu fatto prigioniero. In questa circostanza, Burger, trasgredendo gli ordini, non tolse la vita a Tego che, riavutosi, raggiunse la propria abitazione. Qui trovò la moglie e il figlioletto uccisi. Sepoltili, fece perdere le sue tracce fuggendo sui monti. Finite le ostilità, lo smemorato e sbandato Tego passava di ovile in ovile, sino a che, raggiunto un pastore veniva aggredito a causa del fantasioso racconto che era solito fare a proposito di un tesoro di cui avrebbe lui soltanto conosciuto il nascondiglio. Ucciso il pastore per difesa, Tego riprendeva ad errare con il nome di Gasparre; trovò un amico nel piccolo Stene, un pastorello, e veniva ricercato dai gendarmi. Denunciato e scoperto, Tego tentò di difendersi, ma fu ucciso dai poliziotti. e…

Several years after the last war, Mr. Burger comes to San Gasparre to review the places where he experienced some war episodes. He is kindly welcomed by the parish priest, Don Vincenzo, from whom he asks for information on Tego, a partisan he has not killed in the course of a reprisal. The priest, recalling the facts, narrates the end of the poor man for whom only the hated enemy had compassion. Tego, in fact, belonged to the partisan formation directed by Moreno and, together with Charon, had to blow up a bridge while his companions remained barricaded in the ruins of an old castle, waiting for news that a local woman, Marisa, should have brought them. . But this betrayed the comrades: they were attacked by the Germans and annihilated. Don Vincenzo, warned by the false collaborator Dorina, tried in vain to warn the partisans; reached by the Germans he was taken prisoner. In this circumstance, Burger, transgressing the orders, did not take the life of Tego who, recovering, reached his home. Here he found his wife and son killed. Buried them, he lost his tracks by fleeing to the mountains. After the hostilities, the forgetful and disbanded Tego passed from fold to fold, until, when he reached a shepherd, he was attacked because of the imaginative story he used to tell about a treasure of which he would only know the hiding place. Killed the shepherd in defense, Tego resumed wandering under the name of Gasparre; he found a friend in little Stene, a shepherd boy, and was sought by the gendarmes. Denounced and discovered, Tego tried to defend himself, but was killed by the policemen.
