Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale in Inghilterra, Charlie, Carrie e Paul Rawlins vengono mandati a vivere con Miss Eglantine Price, che si rivela essere un’apprendista strega. Charlie la ricatta, minacciandola di dargli qualcosa in cambio se vuole che mantenga il segreto sulle sue pratiche. Miss Eglantine prende quindi una maniglia dal letto di ottone del defunto padre e vi incide sopra il “famoso incantesimo di viaggio”, che solo Paul può attivare. Il loro primo viaggio li conduce in una strada di Londra, dove incontrano il professor Emelius Browne, ex preside della scuola di stregoneria per corrispondenza frequentata da Miss Price. Lei gli racconta del suo piano per trovare le parole magiche di un incantesimo chiamato “Locomozione Sostitutiva”, che dà vita agli oggetti inanimati. Questo incantesimo sarà il suo contributo allo sforzo bellico.
During World War II in England, Charlie, Carrie, and Paul Rawlins are sent to live with Miss Eglantine Price, who turns out to be an apprentice witch. Charlie blackmails her that if he is to keep her practices secret, she must give him something, so she takes a bedknob from her late father’s brass bed and places the “famous magic travelling spell” on it, and only Paul can activate it. Their first journey is to a street in London, where they meet Professor Emelius Browne, the former headmaster of Miss Price’s witchcraft-training correspondence-school. She tells him of a plan to find the magic words for a spell known as “Substitutiary Locomotion”, which brings inanimate objects to life. This spell will be her work for the war effort.
