Arrigo Petacco tells the truth about the almost legendary deeds of the prefect Cesare Mori, an incorruptible “Piedmontese” official sent by the fascist government to Sicily to defeat the Mafia. A task that he carried out immediately with great effectiveness, also thanks to methods that were not always orthodox and to the huge forces he had been endowed with: a real small army, the entire Palermo Public Prosecutor’s Office at his disposal, extraordinary powers that he used beyond the limits of law. His energetic action made it possible to almost entirely destroy the basic structure of the Sicilian organized underworld and offered Mussolini an argument for his propaganda. But when Mori began to get too famous and investigate too much he was sidelined, and the traces of his work carefully eliminated.
