Chiamato dal vescovo di Palermo ad occuparsi della parrocchia di un quartiere alle porte della città, il quartiere Brancaccio, in meno di due anni Giuseppe Puglisi riesce a costruire un Centro di accoglienza.
Qui, coadiuvato da un gruppetto di giovani volontari, lotta giorno dopo giorno per salvare dalla mala vita decine di piccoli innocenti. Presto capisce che per incidere in quel tessuto disgregato bisogna fare e dare di più, scontrandosi con l’inerzia del potere locale per avere una rete fognaria, una scuola, un distretto sanitario, cose che al Brancaccio mancavano da sempre. Inevitabilmente il suo percorso lo porta a entrare in conflitto con gli interessi del potere mafioso. Fu assassinato il 15 settembre 1993.
