Il maestro elementare Ubaldo Impallato, che non riesce ad ottenere un posto stabile, si arrangia alla meglio facendo una specie di doposcuola per i ragazzi del quartiere.

Un giorno però, il padre di Gigetto, un ragazzo che gli è stato affidato, viene arrestato e condannato a due anni di carcere come falsario. Impallato si rivolge ai parenti del piccino,

che è orfano di madre, ma quelli non vogliono saperne del figlio del “galeotto” e Impallato è costretto a tenerlo con sé, dividendo con lui il poco pane che ha. Ma un giorno Impallato fa

una scoperta strabiliante: Gigetto ha una stupenda voce di baritono, cosa rarissima in un ragazzo. Con infinita pazienza Impallato si dedica al compito di istruire Gigetto, educando la sua voce,

finché può presentarlo ad un impresario, che paga a peso d’oro lo sfruttamento esclusivo delle facoltà canore del grande, piccolo baritono. Un’esibizione alla TV spinge i parenti di

Gigetto a darsi da fare per impadronirsi del ragazzo, ma Gigetto, capendo che i suoi parenti vorrebbero soltanto sfruttarlo, fugge alla vigilia del suo debutto. Essendosi buscato una forte infreddatura,

deve venir sottoposto all’asportazione delle tonsille: perde così la sua voce baritonale, riacquistando la sua voce normale di ragazzo. Ora nessuno vuol più saperne di lui, neanche Impallato,

che ha ottenuto finalmente il posto di maestro di ruolo. Ma poi, disgustato dal contegno dei parenti del piccino, vedendo che Gigetto gli è sinceramente affezionato, Impallato decide di tenerlo con sé.

English:

The elementary teacher Ubaldo Impallato, who is unable to get a stable job, gets by as best he can by making a kind of after-school program for the children of the neighborhood.

One day, however, Gigetto’s father, a boy who has been entrusted to him, is arrested and sentenced to two years in prison as a forger. Impallato turns to the relatives of the child,

that his mother is orphaned, but they do not want to know about the son of the “convict” and Impallato is forced to keep him with him, sharing with him the little bread he has. But one day Impallato ago

an amazing discovery: Gigetto has a wonderful baritone voice, which is very rare in a boy. With infinite patience Impallato dedicates himself to the task of instructing Gigetto, educating his voice,

as long as he can present it to an impresario, who pays a golden weight for the exclusive exploitation of the singing faculties of the great, small baritone. A TV performance pushes relatives of

Gigetto to work hard to get hold of the boy, but Gigetto, realizing that his relatives would only like to exploit him, runs away on the eve of his debut. Having caught a severe cold,

he must be subjected to the removal of his tonsils: thus he loses his baritone voice, regaining his normal boyish voice. Now nobody wants to know about him anymore, not even Impallato,

who finally got the post of tenured teacher. But then, disgusted by the behavior of the child’s relatives, seeing that Gigetto is genuinely fond of him, Impallato decides to keep him with him.
