Mi chiamo Giacomo Mazzariol, ho diciotto anni. Vivo in una cittadina del Veneto con i miei genitori, le mie sorelle Chiara e Alice e mio fratello Giovanni. Io sono il secondogenito, Giovanni è il più piccolo; ci togliamo sei anni. Ci sono alcune cose che dovete sapere, di Giovanni. Lui è uno che, se va a prendere il gelato e gli chiedono: “Cono o coppetta?”, risponde: “Cono!”, e se io gli faccio notare che poi il cono non lo mangia dice: “Be’, neanche la coppetta la mangio!” Giovanni è uno che paga, prende il resto e lo butta via con lo scontrino. È uno che ruba il cappello a un barbone e scappa. Che ama i dinosauri e il rosso. Che va al cinema con una compagna di classe, torna a casa e annuncia che si è sposato. Che balla in mezzo alla piazza, da solo, al suono della musica di un artista di strada, e uno dopo l’altro i passanti cominciano a imitarlo: Giovanni è uno che fa ballare le piazze. Per lui il tempo è sempre venti minuti, mai più di venti minuti: se uno va in vacanza per un mese, è stato via venti minuti. Ogni giorno va in giardino e porta un fiore alle sorelle, e se è inverno e non ne trova, porta loro foglie secche. Giovanni sa essere estenuante, logorante. Giovanni ha dodici anni e un sorriso più grande dei suoi occhiali. È molto meno bravo di me in matematica, però è più simpatico. Giovanni ha un cromosoma in più.

Hai cinque anni, due sorelle e desidereresti tanto un fratellino per fare con lui giochi da maschio. Una sera i tuoi genitori ti annunciano che lo avrai, questo fratello, e che sarà speciale. Tu sei felicissimo: speciale, per te, vuol dire “supereroe”. Gli scegli pure il nome: Giovanni.

Poi lui nasce, e a poco a poco capisci che sì, è diverso dagli altri, ma i superpoteri non li ha. Alla fine scopri la parola “Down”, e il tuo entusiasmo si trasforma in rifiuto, addirittura in vergogna. Dovrai attraversare l’adolescenza per accorgerti che la tua idea iniziale non era così sbagliata. Lasciarti travolgere dalla vitalità di Giovanni per concludere che forse, un supereroe, lui lo è davvero. E che in ogni caso è il tuo migliore amico.

He’s someone who steals a bum’s hat and runs away. Who loves dinosaurs and red. Who goes to the cinema with a classmate, returns home and announces that he is married. Who dances in the middle of the square, alone, to the sound of the music of a street artist, and one after the other passers-by begin to imitate him: Giovanni is one who makes the squares dance. For him, time is always twenty minutes, never more than twenty minutes: if one goes on vacation for a month, he has been away for twenty minutes. Every day he goes into the garden and brings a flower to his sisters, and if it is winter and he doesn’t find any, he brings them dry leaves. Giovanni knows how to be exhausting, exhausting. Giovanni is twelve years old and has a bigger smile than his glasses. He’s much less good at math than me, but he’s more likeable. Giovanni has an extra chromosome.

You are five years old, two sisters and would like a little brother so much to play boy games with him. One night your parents tell you that you will have this brother and that he will be special. You are very happy: special, for you, means “superhero”. You can also choose his name: Giovanni.

Then he is born, and little by little you understand that yes, he is different from the others, but he doesn’t have superpowers.
