La storia si svolge in epoca fascista. Camillo, un barbiere di Acquasalubre, soffre d’una malattia psicosomatica, di isteria da conversione: ha infatti perso l’uso delle gambe senza avere tuttavia alcuna lesione organica e il suo medico ne indica la causa nell’amore finito tra lui e Vittoria, una ragazza di origine francese da tempo residente in Italia.

Nel treno di ritorno da Lourdes, Camillo conosce Orlando, che è realmente paralitico. I due chiacchierano, e Camillo gli parla del suo medico, che gli fa anche da psicanalista il quale è seguace e ammiratore di un certo Sigmund Freud, che però non legge le sue lettere, perché cestinate da una cameriera che, memore della sconfitta dell’Austria nell’ancora recente Prima guerra mondiale, ha in odio gli italiani.

Qualche giorno dopo, Camillo scopre che Vittoria s’è fidanzata con un altro, un francese di nome Bernard, ma lei non ha interrotto i rapporti con Camillo, dato che s’incontrano ancora. Dopo il loro incontro, Bernard lo scopre e litiga con Vittoria, poiché non sopporta che lei l’incontri ancora dopo essersi lasciati. Per la gioia d’un loro possibile riavvicinamento, Camillo guarisce e ritorna a camminare, ma decide di tacere della sua guarigione per non dare un dispiacere a Orlando e rovinare l’amicizia, rivelandolo solamente a Vittoria e al proprio fratello Leone, anche lui barbiere e anche lui anima in pena che, come ammetterà alla fine, esiste solo per accudire il fratello malato.

Per tentare di fare uscire Orlando dal suo profondo stato di solitudine, Camillo organizza con Vittoria un incontro in cui finge d’incontrare casualmente la ragazza, accompagnata dall’amica Anita che, secondo Camillo, s’avvicinerebbe ai gusti di Orlando, allo scopo di favorirne un’eventuale relazione. Anita si dichiara però fervente ammiratrice del Duce e abbandona disgustata la sala da tè dopo una battuta di Camillo su Mussolini. Orlando, inoltre, invece che d’Anita, s’innamora di Vittoria e lo rivela all’amico. Qualche giorno dopo, vedendolo per caso uscire dalla vasca da solo, Orlando scopre la guarigione di Camillo.

Il giorno dopo, Camillo si reca a Roma per brevettare due lozioni di sua invenzione, una contro la calvizie ed una contro il dolore, ma il gerarca fascista che presiede l’ufficio brevetti lo arringa, quasi con disprezzo, dicendo che secondo il duce (che era calvo!) la via della salvezza è “segnata dal dolore e dalla sofferenza”. Quindi Camillo ritorna deluso ed amareggiato al paese. Al suo ritorno verrà arrestato a causa della battuta rivolta ad Anita, che ha fatto la spia e ha mandato una spedizione punitiva. Rimarrà in carcere due anni, dove si riammalerà di nuovo. Uscirà grazie a Orlando, nel frattempo diventato un importante funzionario del partito. Orlando gli assicura che tra lui e Vittoria non c’è mai stato nulla al di là dell’amicizia, e che inoltre s’appresta a partire per un viaggio in Etiopia.

Al suo ritorno a casa, troverà una lettera di Vittoria contenente una fotografia in cui la ragazza indossa una paglietta, che Camillo riconosce come da lui regalata in precedenza a Orlando e si convince, anche per una maliziosa insinuazione da parte di Leone, che Orlando e Vittoria vivano insieme a Parigi. Una volta nella capitale transalpina, dopo averla trovata, scopre che le sue erano solo gelosie (Orlando aveva a sua volta regalato la paglietta a Vittoria prima del congedo definitivo) e i due possono finalmente ritornare insieme.

The story takes place in the fascist era. Camillo, a barber from Acquasalubre, suffers from a psychosomatic illness, from conversion hysteria: in fact, he has lost the use of his legs without however having any organic lesions and his doctor indicates the cause of the love affair between him and Vittoria. a girl of French origin who has long lived in Italy.

On the return train from Lourdes, Camillo meets Orlando, who is really paralyzed. The two chat, and Camillo talks to him about his doctor, who also acts as a psychoanalyst who is a follower and admirer of a certain Sigmund Freud, who however does not read his letters, because they are trashed by a waitress who, mindful of the defeat of the Austria in the still recent First World War hates Italians.

A few days later, Camillo discovers that Vittoria is engaged to another, a Frenchman named Bernard, but she has not broken off relations with Camillo, since they still meet. After their meeting, Bernard finds out and quarrels with Vittoria, as he can’t stand her meeting him again after they break up. For the joy of their possible rapprochement, Camillus heals and walks again, but decides to keep silent about his recovery so as not to displease Orlando and ruin the friendship, revealing it only to Vittoria and her brother Leone, also a barber. and he too is a soul in pain who, as he will admit in the end, exists only to look after his sick brother.

To try to get Orlando out of his profound state of loneliness, Camillo organizes a meeting with Vittoria in which he pretends to meet the girl by chance, accompanied by her friend Anita who, according to Camillo, would be closer to Orlando’s tastes, in order to foster a possible relationship. However, Anita declares herself a fervent admirer of the Duce and leaves the tea room in disgust after a joke by Camillo about Mussolini. Furthermore, Orlando, instead of Anita, falls in love with Vittoria and reveals it to his friend. A few days later, seeing him by chance get out of the tub alone, Orlando discovers Camillo’s recovery.

The next day, Camillo goes to Rome to patent two lotions of his own invention, one against baldness and one against pain, but the Fascist hierarch who presides over the patent office harangues him, almost contemptuously, saying that according to the Duce ( that he was bald!) the path to salvation is “marked by pain and suffering”. So Camillo returns disappointed and embittered to the village. On his return he will be arrested because of the joke addressed to Anita, who snitched and sent a punitive expedition. He will remain in prison for two years, where he will fall ill again. It will come out thanks to Orlando, who has meanwhile become an important party official. Orlando assures him that there has never been anything between him and Vittoria beyond friendship, and that he is also preparing to leave on a trip to Ethiopia.

On his return home, he will find a letter from Vittoria containing a photograph in which the girl is wearing a straw hat, which Camillo recognizes as a gift he had previously given to Orlando and he is convinced, partly through a malicious insinuation on the part of Leone, that Orlando and Vittoria live together in Paris. Once in the transalpine capital, after finding her, he discovers that his were only jealousies (Orlando had in turn given Vittoria the boater before his final leave) and the two can finally get back together.
