Intelligent and irreverent, it offers a unique and tongue-in-cheek take on the Cosa Nostra’s brutal and bloody criminal campaign of fear and intimidation. Beginning in 1979 in Palermo, the story unfolds through the eyes of one young boy, Salvatore and his family. As Salvatore falls in love with new girl at school, Alice and competes for her affection with best friend Fofo, his father Lorenzo tries to stay true his principles in a city where the Mafia code prevails. But the more he resists the inevitable pull of the Mafia, the more he has to compromise.

The series portrays the Mafia in a considered, ironic fashion and closely tracks Palermo’s colourful history as major real-life events, police investigations, shocking crimes and unscrupulous politics intertwine with the family’s life. Brave, subversive and thoughtful, Mafia Only Kills in Summer examines Italy’s violent history to better understand the country as it is today.
