Nell’immediato dopoguerra, tra le macerie di una Napoli piegata dalla miseria, i piccoli Carmine e Celestina tentano di sopravvivere come possono, aiutandosi a vicenda. Una notte, s’imbarcano come clandestini su una nave diretta a New York per andare a vivere con la sorella di Celestina emigrata mesi prima. I due bambini si uniscono ai tanti emigranti italiani in cerca di fortuna in America e sbarcano in una metropoli sconosciuta, che dopo numerose peripezie, impareranno a chiamare casa.

“Napoli-New York” è ispirato a una storia vera raccontata come una favola oppure, se volete, come una favola molto legata alla realtà. Una storia scritta benissimo, con grande bravura nel tenere desta l’attenzione dello spettatore con continue svolte e colpi di scena. Un film “classico” potremmo dire, ma con un’anima molto moderna.

In the immediate postwar period, amid the rubble of a Naples gripped by poverty, young Carmine and Celestina try to survive as best they can, helping each other. One night, they stow away on a ship bound for New York to live with Celestina’s sister, who had emigrated months earlier. The two children join the many Italian emigrants seeking their fortune in America and disembark in an unfamiliar metropolis, which, after many adventures, they will learn to call home.

“Naples-New York” is inspired by a true story told like a fairytale, or, if you prefer, like a fairytale closely tied to reality. A beautifully written story, with great skill in holding the viewer’s attention with constant twists and turns. A “classic” film, we might say, but with a very modern soul.
