Sydney, nell’ultimo decennio del XX secolo. Josie Alibrandi è una adolescente australiana diciassettenne di origini italiane. Josie vive con la madre Christina e la nonna Katia. La madre di Josie, Christina, è nubile: rimasta incinta di Josie all’età di 17 anni, ha cresciuto la bambina contro il volere del proprio padre e senza l’aiuto del genitore di Josie il quale peraltro è andato via da Sydney e ignora di essere diventato padre. Josie si sente australiana e mostra insofferenza per le tradizioni italiane osservate dai parenti, in particolare dalla nonna Katia.

Josie frequenta l’ultimo anno della scuola superiore in un esclusivo istituto cattolico di Sydney a cui la ragazza ha accesso grazie a una borsa di studio. Le divisioni sociali fra gli studenti sono molto forti: Josie frequenta soprattutto due amiche anch’esse di origine italiana, mentre sopporta a fatica l’atteggiamento razzista di Carly Bishop, una sua compagna di scuola snob e appartenente a una famiglia facoltosa. Josie deve affrontare e superare gravi problemi con i suoi coetanei (per esempio, il suicidio di un amico) e con i suoi familiari. Conosce il proprio padre, col quale instaura un ottimo rapporto, e accetta infine serenamente anche le vicende e le tradizioni italiane dei propri familiari.

ENGLISH:

Sydney, in the last decade of the 20th century. Josie Alibrandi is a seventeen-year-old Australian teenager of Italian descent. Josie lives with her mother Christina and grandmother Katia. Josie’s mother, Christina, is unmarried: she became pregnant with Josie at the age of 17, raised the child against her father’s wishes and without the help of Josie’s parent who, moreover, has gone away from Sydney and ignores to have become a father. Josie feels Australian and shows impatience with the Italian traditions observed by relatives, especially by her grandmother Katia.

Josie attends the last year of high school in an exclusive Catholic institution in Sydney to which the girl has access thanks to a scholarship. The social divisions among the students are very strong: Josie mainly hangs out with two friends who are also of Italian origin, while she can hardly bear the racist attitude of Carly Bishop, a snobbish schoolmate from a wealthy family. Josie has to face and overcome serious problems with her peers (for example, the suicide of a friend) and with her family. He knows his father, with whom he establishes an excellent relationship, and finally accepts serenely the Italian events and traditions of his family members.
