Una compagnia di guitti capita in una cittadina di provincia per alcune recite ma gli incassi sono piuttosto magri e di conseguenza la fame è assai robusta. Il maestro di scuola del luogo, che da anni cova in petto il desiderio di far rappresentare un suo dramma in versi: “Il ratto delle sabine”, ritiene sia giunto il momento buono e propone la cosa al capocomico il quale accetta dietro un congruo compenso. La sera del debutto il teatro è gremito perché, malgrado il desiderio dell’autore di conservare l’anonimato, tutti i paesani l’hanno saputo e vogliono assistere alla recita che si risolve in un fiasco completo e in un parapiglia generale a cui il pubblico prende parte attiva

ENGLISH:

A troupe of strolling players arrives in a provincial town for some performances, but the takings are rather meager, and consequently, the hunger is very high. The local schoolteacher, who has been nursing for years the desire to stage his play in verse, “The Rape of the Sabine Women,” believes the time has come and proposes it to the director, who accepts for a suitable fee. On the opening night, the theater is packed because, despite the author’s desire to remain anonymous, all the townspeople have heard about it and want to attend the performance, which ends in a complete fiasco and a general brawl in which the audience actively participates.
