Nel bicentenario della nascita di Verdi, il libro, costruito come una conversazione a due voci, affronta il rapporto fra Verdi e Shakespeare. I due autori, legati da una cinquantennale amicizia, svolgono attività professionali diverse nell’ambito del mondo teatrale e musicale che qui si incontrano e si confrontano. Il libro, dunque, in uno stile alquanto vivace, affronta il tema della drammaturgia nel teatro di prosa e in quello musicale, partendo dall’analisi dei lavori verdiani ispirati al teatro shakespeariano: Macbeth, Otello, Falstaff. Particolare attenzione viene rivolta all’opera “mancata”, a quel Re Lear che Verdi meditò e studiò a lungo ma che non realizzò mai. Una vicenda artistica interessante della quale ci rimangono quali documentazioni il carteggio fra il musicista e il librettista Somma e il libretto redatto in due successive versioni. Per ogni titolo affrontato viene proposta anche una scheda di comparazione fra il testo shakespeariano e il libretto verdiano.

On the bicentenary of Verdi’s birth, the book, constructed as a conversation for two voices, addresses the relationship between Verdi and Shakespeare. The two authors, linked by a fifty-year friendship, carry out different professional activities in the theatrical and musical world that meet and compare here. The book, therefore, in a rather lively style, addresses the theme of dramaturgy in prose and musical theater, starting from the analysis of Verdi’s works inspired by Shakespearean theater: Macbeth, Otello, Falstaff. Particular attention is paid to the “missing” work, to that King Lear that Verdi meditated and studied for a long time but never realized. An interesting artistic story of which the correspondence between the musician and the librettist Somma and the libretto drawn up in two successive versions remain as documents. For each title dealt with, a comparison sheet is also proposed between the Shakespearean text and the Verdi libretto.
