Il duca spiantato Gagliardo della Forcoletta partecipa al quiz “Lascia o raddoppia?” con la speranza di poter pagare le nozze alla figlia. Grazie alla sua enciclopedica preparazione sull’ippica, arrivano le prime vittorie, ma anche due gangster che cercano con le minacce di pilotarlo per intascarsi i soldi delle scommesse. Il duca non sa che pesci pigliare. Lasciare o raddoppiare?

Totò è un nobile decaduto e squattrinato, che vive in una pensione senza pagare un soldo, approfittando del fatto che la padrona ha un debole per lui e vorrebbe sposarlo. Egli aspetta ansiosamente la notizia di un’eredità, ma il notaio va a trovarlo per comunicargli una notizia ben diversa. Una cliente gli ha confidato, prima di morire, di avere una figlia, di nome Emma, impiegata come cassiera in un piccolo bar: Totò ne è il padre. Totò si precipita al bar e trova Emma in lacrime: il suo fidanzato è caduto a “Lascia o raddoppia” e le sue speranze di matrimonio se ne sono andate in fumo. Totò decide di partecipare alla rubrica televisiva per poter offrire alla figliola la vincita, che egli spera di conseguire come esperto d’ippica: riesce infatti a conquistare le prime 320.000 lire. La trasmissione è stata seguita da due ex gangsters americani, restituiti all’Italia come indesiderabili: Joe Taccola e Nick Molise. I due scommettono 1000 dollari: vincerà Taccola se Totò lascerà, vincerà Molise se raddoppierà. Totò continua a raddoppiare e a vincere e coi suoi consigli fa affari d’oro alle corse. Taccola è furente e raddoppia per due volte la posta, Molise è felice ma, per precauzione, fa rapire Totò e gli promette due milioni se raddoppia. Totò raddoppia e vince. Taccola lo fa rapire e minaccia di ucciderlo, se tenterà di raddoppiare. In preda al terrore, Totò tenta di restituire i due milioni avuti da Molise, ma questi dichiara che lo ammazzerà se non raddoppia. Preso tra due fuochi, Totò scappa, ma viene riportato per forza sul palcoscenico. Fuor di sè dalla paura, risponde macchinalmente alle domande e vince senza accorgersi i cinque milioni. I due gangsters vengono arrestati dalla polizia e Totò potrà far felice la sua figliola.

The penniless Duke Gagliardo della Forcoletta participates in the quiz show “Double or Leaving?” in the hopes of paying for his daughter’s wedding. Thanks to his encyclopedic knowledge of horse racing, he begins to win, but so do two gangsters who try to manipulate him with threats to pocket the betting money. The Duke is at a loss. Double or leaving?

Totò is a penniless, impoverished nobleman who lives in a boarding house without paying a cent, taking advantage of the fact that his landlady has a soft spot for him and wants to marry him. He anxiously awaits news of an inheritance, but the notary comes to him with very different news. A client confided in him, before dying, that she had a daughter named Emma, who works as a cashier in a small bar: Totò is her father. Totò rushes to the bar and finds Emma in tears: her fiancé has fallen on “Double or Nothing,” and her hopes of marriage are dashed. Totò decides to appear on a television program so he can offer his daughter the winnings, which he hopes to earn as a horse racing expert: he manages to win the first 320,000 lire. The show was attended by two former American gangsters, returned to Italy as undesirables: Joe Taccola and Nick Molise. The two bet $1,000: Taccola will win if Totò leaves, and Molise will win if he doubles. Totò continues to double and win, and with his advice, he makes a roaring profit at the races. Taccola is furious and doubles his bet twice. Molise is delighted, but, as a precaution, has Totò kidnapped and promises him two million if he doubles. Totò doubles and wins. Taccola has him kidnapped and threatens to kill him if he tries to double. Terrified, Totò attempts to return the two million he received from Molise, but Molise declares he will kill him if he doesn’t double. Caught between two fires, Totò runs away, but is forced back on stage. Beside himself with fear, he answers questions mechanically and unknowingly wins the five million. The two gangsters are arrested by the police and Totò will be able to make his daughter happy.
