Born into a peasant family in Bonito (Avellino) in 1898, the eleventh of fourteen children, Salvatore Ferragamo has been captivated by the magic associated with the art of creating footwear since he was a child. Determined to pursue his dream, he emigrated to the United States at a very young age, just as the film industry was creating its first stars; a career will kick off from Hollywood that will establish him as an icon of Italian fashion in the world and one of the most original stylists loved by stars. While he brought prestige to the country, bringing his headquarters back to Palazzo Spini Feroni in Florence in 1927, and in the 1960s he prematurely passed the baton to his heirs.
Luca Guadagnino’s documentary assembles and recomposes a colossal amount of voices, materials and various interventions by experts in fashion, cinema, costume: among the many, the couturiers Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik, the fashion editor Grace Coddington and the journalist Giusi Ferré, the encyclopedic Martin Scorsese and Jay Weissberg of “Variety”.
Between one interview and another, the film also follows the steps of today’s creation of the “Marylin” (worn by Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes), then those of the famous “Rainbow”, to then close with a stop motion sequence , A Dream of Hollywood, which pays homage to the corpus of Ferragamo collections by replicating the geometric choreographies a la Busby Berkeley, with shoes that come alive and replace the corps de ballet. These are extremely enjoyable moments of the film, which unfolds several external archives, in addition to that of the maison, with a significant presence of the intimate Super 8s shot by its founder.
Inspired by the autobiography “The shoemaker of dreams” (published by Skira, reprinted by Electa) and written by fashion journalist Dana Thomas (author of “Fashionopolis”) Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams is a work created over three years : on the one hand it has the merits of paying homage to the spirit of initiative, the passionate expertise and the genius of a sui generis craftsman and of identifying a precise moment of the studios, in an era before product placement and therefore all to be reconstructed, rather centered on craftsmanship and taste for detail. On the other hand, in the effort to frame a long tale of family love, self-fulfillment and homecoming, it appears characterized by an excessively complacent approach towards the heirs and held back by the desire to embrace a myriad of sources.
