Greville Fane: vita e letteratura a doppio filo
ENGLISH:
Henry James, in his short story production, demonstrated an almost obsessive propensity for depicting the figure of the writer; many of his short stories can be seen as reflections on the act of writing itself. Writing, in James’s time, increasingly became a social act, increasingly a profession, with all the limitations of the term, with its forced stages and clichés to be adhered to.
Two exemplary short stories: Greville Fane and The Master’s Lesson
We will examine two short stories in particular that I happened to welcome into my library somewhat by chance, as often happens to bibliomaniac collectors: Greville Fane and The Master’s Lesson, the latter published by Adelphi (11 euros); the first was read in the edition released on newsstands by Repubblica/L’Espresso.
Greville Fane: Life and Literature in Double Thread
Greville Fane portrays a writer of popular novels, the kind that often find public acclaim but not critical acclaim. These novels are the protagonist’s tools for social climbing, a dream that seems to live endlessly through her characters.
James here represents a dangerous osmosis between life and fictional stories, a sort of conscious and scientific Bovarism. Greville begins to manipulate his son as if he were a character to be molded: outlining his plot, his growth, and even his career. The not-so-subtle allusion is to Anthony Trollope, who, it is said, imposed strict writing schedules on himself and attempted to groom his son for a literary career.
Conclusion
What is James’s opinion of Greville? If we were to superimpose his gaze onto that of the narrator, a mixture of irony and piety emerges. Writing is finding meaning in life, but it must not become the arrogance of wanting to regulate everything, including things and people; life, in the end, even for James, who has dedicated his existence to it, is not just a written book. Even if there are some beautiful written books…!
Henry James’ two short stories still offer a lucid reflection on the craft of writing and the fine line between art and control.
