Era alta, bruna e magra, con un busto fiero e voluttuoso, nonostante non fosse più giovane. Aveva il pallore di chi soffre di malaria e in quel pallore inquietante due grandi occhi neri e labbra che promettevano gioia ma portavano sofferenza e sventura. In paese la chiamavano “La lupa” perché sembrava non accontentarsi mai di niente. Le donne attraversavano la strada al suo passaggio, solitarie come un cane bastardo, con quell’atteggiamento inquieto e sornione proprio di una lupa affamata. Nonostante fosse considerata una maledizione per l’intero Paese, tutti gli uomini ne erano ossessionati e forse avrebbero sacrificato la serenità familiare anche solo per uno sguardo. Ma un giorno la lupa si innamorò perdutamente del giovane Nanni.

She was tall, dark and thin, with a proud and voluptuous bust, even though she was no longer young. He had the pallor of those suffering from malaria and in that disquieting pallor two big black eyes and lips that promised joy but led to suffering and misfortune. In the village they called her “The she-wolf” because she seemed never to be satisfied with anything. The women crossed the street when she passed, lonely like a mongrel dog, with that restless and sly manner just like a hungry she-wolf. Although she was considered a curse for the whole country, all the men were obsessed with her and perhaps they would have sacrificed their family serenity just for a glance. But one day the she-wolf fell madly in love with young Nanni.
