(Triple CD “Milva”, BMG, 05.27.2016). Finally a collection of Milva that doesn’t limit itself to re-proposing the usual lineup of songs taken from the previous compilation and from the one even before, but a real anthology that traces about 50 years of the singer’s amazing career by fishing between known and lesser known songs, selected for be each representative of a period, of an event or in any case of a stage in some relevant way of the many musical fields in which Milva has worked.
From the “Sanremo Festival” to the “Disco per l’estate”, from “Canzonissima” to the Saturday night shows of the 80s in which she was the protagonist, from the theater to prestigious author songs (Battiato, Jannacci, Venditti, Morricone, Vangelis just to name a few) this splendid collection on three CDs offers a wide-ranging overview of Milva’s extraordinary interpretative skills, capable of dominating everything and everyone thanks to an innate talent and a superlative voice.
The first CD features 16 recordings ranging from 1966 to 1974; the second CD covers the period from the 1980s to the last album released in Italy a few years ago, “I don’t know any Patrizio”, passing through famous songs such as “Alexanderplatz”, “Canto a Lloret”, “An invented story” and many others; the third CD proposes well-known and lesser-known songs never before published in digital such as “If crying I will have to” (a true jewel of interpretation like “Qualcosa di mio”), the beautiful “Fumo e odor di caffè” (in which Milva is accompanied by Astor Piazolla), and many other rarities to be discovered or rediscovered, such as two famous Italian songs sung in Japanese and published so far only on the Japanese market.
The graphic layout is also very well-finished, which makes use of a refined vintage shot for the cover reworked by the great Luciano Tallarini, author of some of the most beautiful and ingenious covers of all Italian discography; the package opens to reveal an autograph of the singer inside, and contains a pleasant booklet with notes that will please all admirers of the Red.
Presenting a compendium of the career of a singer like Milva in “only” three CDs always forces one to leave aside songs that certainly, from other points of view, would have deserved to be included; however, the fact remains that the 46 tracks featured here offer both long-time and more recent admirers the opportunity to enjoy an exciting listening from the first to the last track, and for this we must unconditionally thank those who curated and followed the project . Even young people who, due to age issues, have not been able to get to know Milva and her voice, with this triple album will be able to have at least an idea of how great her art is.
Now let’s wait for BMG to reproduce on CD the many albums recorded by Milva complete with each song; even a complete recording of the Fonit-Cetra period (from 1960 to 1966) is something that fans have been waiting for for years, and which would do justice to one of the greatest voices of Italian music ever. Surely there will be sales.
