Muore un vecchio zio, lasciando ai suoi tre nipoti un cantiere ed una villa ma sull’eredità gravano varie ipoteche. Uno degli eredi, l’ing. Roberto Varesi, vorrebbe rifiutare l’eredità ritenendo offensive per la memoria di sua madre, alcune frasi del testamento ma un’altra erede, la bella Susanna, lo persuade a tentare l’impresa di salvare il cantiere pericolante. Il terzo erede, Giacomo, fannullone e giocatore, non vuol saperne di partecipare all’impresa. Giacomo, che ha fatto una grossa vincita, ha per amante Viviana un’avventuriera ma questo non gli impedisce di far la corte a Susanna. Quando questa lo respinge, annunciandogli il suo prossimo matrimonio con Roberto, i cui affari prosperano, Giacomo promette a sé stesso di distruggere la felicità dei cugini. Passano gli anni: in seguito ad oscure manovre Giacomo è riuscito ad essere uno dei principali soci dell’azienda di Roberto e riesce anche a fargli credere che la di lui moglie, Susanna, sia divenuta la sua amante. Credendosi tradito, Roberto affida la sua bimba, che egli crede frutto di un amore illecito, a dei contadini. In seguito a vari casi la bimba è esposta a gravi pericoli, dai quali a stento può liberarla Roberto. Intanto Giacomo, feritosi per caso mortalmente, confessa, prima di morire, le sue malefatte. La serenità, l’amore, la pace tornano a regnare nella casa di Roberto..

An old uncle dies, leaving his three nephews a shipyard and a villa, but the inheritance is burdened by various mortgages. One of the heirs, the engineer Roberto Varesi, would like to refuse the inheritance, considering some sentences in the will offensive to the memory of his mother, but another heir, the beautiful Susanna, persuades him to attempt the enterprise of saving the unsafe shipyard. The third heir, Giacomo, a layabout and gambler, does not want to participate in the enterprise. Giacomo, who has made a big win, has Viviana, an adventuress, as a lover, but this does not stop him from courting Susanna. When she rejects him, announcing her upcoming marriage to Roberto, whose business is prospering, Giacomo promises himself to destroy the happiness of his cousins. The years pass: following obscure maneuvers Giacomo has managed to be one of the main partners of Roberto’s company and also manages to make him believe that his wife, Susanna, has become his lover. Believing himself betrayed, Roberto entrusts his little girl, whom he believes to be the fruit of an illicit love, to some farmers. Following various incidents, the little girl is exposed to grave dangers, from which Roberto can barely free her. Meanwhile Giacomo, accidentally mortally wounded, confesses his misdeeds before dying. Serenity, love, and peace reign once again in Roberto’s house.
