Il barone Antonio Peletti è un avaraccio inviso a tutti. Suo padre morendo gli ha lasciato un tesoro in monete d’oro e gioielli, che egli tiene nascosto in un ripostiglio sotto l’impiantito: secondo il testamento paterno, metà del tesoro spetta al Municipio, che dovrà erigere una scuola, l’altra metà spetta al figlio di Antonio, Gastone. Ma il barone nega l’esistenza del testamento e del tesoro e caccia di casa Gastone, negando il suo assenso al di lui matrimonio con Marion. Gastone scopre per caso il tesoro, contenuto in una cassetta, e dopo essersene impadronito, sostituendolo con dei ciottoli, s’allontana dal paese. Per costringere il barone a dire la verità i maggiorenti del paese gli fanno una burla atroce: egli crede d’essere stato avvelenato e di trovarsi già nell’al di là. Ad un’ex ballerina, ch’egli prende per un angelo, rivela dove si trovi la cassetta, ma quando s’accorge della burla, il barone rincorre l’ex ballerina e riesce ad imbarcarsi anche lui su una mongolfiera in partenza. Dopo qualche tempo tutti credono che la mongolfiera sia finita in mare con gli occupanti: Gastone torna in paese, assegna al Municipio la metà del tesoro e sposa Marion. Mentre s’inaugura la scuola, ricompare il barone, che non è affatto morto e non può far altro che accettare il fatto compiuto.

Baron Antonio Peletti is a miser, hated by all. His father, upon his death, left him a treasure of gold coins and jewels, which he keeps hidden in a closet beneath the floorboards. According to his father’s will, half of the treasure goes to the town hall, which is to build a school, and the other half goes to Antonio’s son, Gastone. But the baron denies the existence of the will and the treasure, and throws Gastone out of the house, refusing his consent to his marriage to Marion. Gastone accidentally discovers the treasure, contained in a chest, and after stealing it, replacing it with pebbles, he leaves the village. To force the baron to tell the truth, the village elders play a cruel prank on him: he believes he has been poisoned and is already in the afterlife. He reveals the location of the box to a former ballerina, whom he mistakes for an angel. However, when he discovers the prank, the Baron chases after the former ballerina and manages to board a departing hot air balloon. After some time, everyone believes the balloon has fallen into the sea with its occupants. Gaston returns to town, assigns half of the treasure to the Town Hall, and marries Marion. As the school is being inaugurated, the Baron reappears, not dead at all and unable to do anything but accept the fait accompli.
