Callimaco, fiorentino di ricca famiglia, dalla Francia, ove dissipa il suo tempo in compagnia di giovani scioperati e gaudenti, ritorna a Firenze, attratto dalla fama dell’avvenenza di Lucrezia: onestissima moglie del notaio Nicia Calfucci. Da Ligurio, uno scroccatore di pranzi, abituale frequentatore di casa Calfucci, Callimaco viene a sapere che il notaio, preoccupato per la mancanza di un erede, va sperimentando ogni rimedio per guarire la presunta sterilità della moglie. Dopo qualche inutile tentativo di Callimaco per avvicinare la virtuosa Luerezia, Ligurio, per denaro, gli propone un audace piano che viene subito attuato. Il giovane patrizio, fingendosi un esperto medico francese, convince Nicia a propinare alla moglie un pericoloso e potente infuso a base di mandragola, che elimina la sterilità – egli assicura – ma molto spesso provoca la morte del primo uomo che s’accosti alla donna che l’ha sorbita. Il notaio, famoso per la sua credulità, accetta l’esperimento e consente che un vagabondo, preso a caso nelle vie della città, finisca nel letto della moglie per neutralizzare a proprie spese l’effetto della mandragola. Intanto Ligurio ricorre a Timoteo, un frate corrotto, perchè convinca Lucrezia della liceità dell’esperimento. Naturalmente tutto viene combinato in modo che il vagabondo sia Callimaco e il raggiro riesce tanto bene che Lucrezia, gettata alle ortiche la propria onestà, non solo si concederà a Callimaco, ma lo eleggerà a proprio stabile amante.

Callimaco, a Florentine from a wealthy family, returns to Florence from France, where he wastes his time in the company of idle, hedonistic young men. He is attracted by the famed beauty of Lucrezia, the upright wife of the notary Nicia Calfucci. From Ligurio, a scrounger and frequent visitor to the Calfucci household, Callimaco learns that the notary, worried about the lack of an heir, is experimenting with every remedy to cure his wife’s alleged sterility. After Callimaco’s several unsuccessful attempts to approach the virtuous Lucrezia, Ligurio, for money, proposes a bold plan that is immediately put into action. The young patrician, posing as an expert French doctor, convinces Nicia to give his wife a dangerous and powerful mandrake infusion, which he assures will cure sterility, but very often causes the death of the first man who approaches the woman who has imbibed it. The notary, renowned for his gullibility, agrees to the experiment and allows a vagabond, randomly selected from the city streets, to end up in his wife’s bed to counteract the mandrake’s effect at his own expense. Meanwhile, Ligurio enlists the help of Timoteo, a corrupt friar, to convince Lucrezia of the experiment’s legitimacy. Naturally, everything is arranged so that the vagabond is Callimaco, and the deception is so successful that Lucrezia, throwing away her own honesty, not only gives herself to Callimaco, but makes him her permanent lover.
