Otello che fa l’avvocato a Napoli e Brigitte, che esercita la professione di medico negli Stati Uniti, si conoscono in occasione di un congresso internazionale, s’innamorano reciprocamente, si sposano e si stabiliscono a Napoli. Brigitte continuerà ad esercitare la propria professione all’insaputa delle due zie di Otello, conservatrici e sospettose, che interpretando erroneamente le sue frequenti telefonate, le considerano come l’indizio di un’attività equivoca e incaricano due detectives privati di spiare le mosse della nipote. Il caso vuole che i due investigatori siano tali da non offrire alcuna garanzia di saper contribuire ad una chiarificazione. Approfittando dell’assenza del titolare dell’agenzia, cui appartengono, i due si spacciano per investigatori di non comune acume e competenza e si dedicano all’impresa con gran zelo e col fermo proposito di ottenere dei risultati brillanti. A complicare le cose Brigitte è chiamata a prestare le sue cure ad un nobile notoriamente molto sensibile al fascino femminile, il quale di recente s’è buscato una scarica di pallini da un marito geloso. Ce n’è più che abbastanza per impressionare anche Otello, il quale, divenuto preda di false apparenze e di sospetti ingiustificati, sente il morso della gelosia, credendosi tradito dall’onesta moglie. Alla fine però tutto si chiarisce e, fugato ogni sospetto, l’amore torna a rifulgere nel cielo coniugale. Le due zie si convincono dell’infondatezza delle loro supposizioni e i due detectives tornano al loro mestiere originario che è quello di lustrascarpe.

Otello, a lawyer in Naples, and Brigitte, a doctor in the United States, meet at an international conference, fall in love, marry, and settle in Naples. Brigitte continues to practice her profession unbeknownst to Otello’s two conservative and suspicious aunts, who misinterpret her frequent phone calls as evidence of shady activity and hire two private detectives to spy on their niece. As it happens, the two investigators are not guaranteed to be able to contribute to a clarification. Taking advantage of the absence of the owner of the agency to which they belong, the two pass themselves off as investigators of uncommon acumen and competence and dedicate themselves to the task with great zeal and the firm resolve to achieve brilliant results. To complicate matters, Brigitte is called upon to care for a nobleman notoriously susceptible to feminine charms, who has recently been shot by a jealous husband. This is more than enough to impress even Othello, who, prey to false appearances and unjustified suspicions, feels the pang of jealousy, believing himself betrayed by his honest wife. Eventually, however, everything is cleared up, and with all suspicions dispelled, love shines brightly again in the marital heaven. The two aunts are convinced that their assumptions are unfounded, and the two detectives return to their original profession, that of shoe shiners.
