Andreas, a homeless man, lives under the bridges of Paris. When a mysterious passerby gives him a small sum of money, he accepts it, promising to return it the following Sunday with an offer in church. Whenever he has enough money in his pocket to pay off his debt, however, Andreas cannot resist the temptation to use it to chase after vices and pleasures and the return of those two hundred francs becomes his tormented reason for existing. From this story, translated all over the world and considered Roth’s literary testament, the homonymous film by Ermanno Olmi, Golden Lion in Venice in 1988, is based.
