Papa pio xiii, ossia il primo pontefice americano lenny belardo, è in coma ormai da mesi, dopo il collasso avuto a venezia e vari trapianti di cuore. Il cardinale voiello, consigliato dall’astuto e misterioso bauer, si lascia convincere a indire un conclave per eleggere un nuovo papa. Le elezioni non vanno però come si aspetta e per non cedere l’incarico a un suo nemico, finisce per affidarlo a un uomo inadeguato, che sarà per altro travolto dal potere. Urge quindi porre rimedio con un ulteriore nuovo papa e l’unico candidato accettabile sembra essere sir john brannox, che nasconde però più di un segreto ed è segnato da un grande dolore. Come se non bastasse il califfato minaccia una guerra santa e un gruppo di fedeli sta scivolando verso il fanatismo e l’idolatria di pio xiii.

Pope pius xiii, the first american pontiff lenny belardo, has been in a coma for months now, after the collapse in venice and various heart transplants. Cardinal Voiello, advised by the shrewd and mysterious Bauer, lets himself be persuaded to call a conclave to elect a new pope. However, the elections do not go as expected and in order not to give the office to one of his enemies, he ends up entrusting it to an inadequate man, who will be overwhelmed by power. It is therefore urgent to remedy with another new pope and the only acceptable candidate seems to be sir john brannox, who, however, hides more than one secret and is marked by great pain. As if that were not enough, the caliphate threatens a holy war and a group of faithful is sliding towards the fanaticism and idolatry of pius xiii.
